Goddess Tara – Portrait Workshop with Phenpo Tendhar

  • Chenrezig Institute 33 Johnsons Road Eudlo, QLD, 4554 Australia (map)

About Event:

Join us for a rare opportunity to learn from master Thangka artist Phenpo Tendhar, a ninth-generation painter from one of Tibet’s most respected artistic lineages. Over two days, participants will explore the sacred image of Goddess Tara, one of the most beloved figures in the Buddhist tradition. Revered as the embodiment of compassion, wisdom, and swift action, Tara is often called upon as a liberator, guiding beings through obstacles and fears.

Day One- Saturday 13th September 10am- 3pm

Day one will focus on drawing Tara’s face using a traditional grid system passed down through centuries of Tibetan artistic lineage—an approach that ensures the sacred proportions and symbolism are preserved.

Day Two - Sunday 14th September 10am - 3pm

Day two will guide students step-by-step through the process of painting Tara’s face, bringing the drawing to life with colour and expression.

Students are welcome to attend either one or both days, though priority will be given to those attending the full workshop as places are limited.

Book early to secure your spot in this inspiring, hands-on immersion into Tibetan sacred art.

ABOUT TEACHER

Phenpo Tendhar (Tenzin Dhargay) is a ninth-generation Tibetan Thangka artist from the Yulna Khari Khangsar family, a lineage of masters dating back to the 1600s and the time of the 5th Dalai Lama. Trained from childhood by his father, the eminent artist Jampal Wangchuk, Tendhar spent over a decade mastering the sacred art of Tibetan Traditional Thangka Painting.

His career has taken him from Tibet to Dharamshala, where he earned a certificate of excellence from the Tibetan Library Thangka School, and to Nepal, where he founded a thriving Thangka painting studio and school. His work includes major cultural projects such as the Kalachakra Temple at Tsuklak-khang.

Now based in Toronto, Canada, Tendhar travels worldwide to teach, create, and preserve the living tradition of Thangka painting, ensuring its transmission to future generations.
