About Event:
Thangka paintings are composed of different hues of pigments. Traditionally, natural stone colors, plant dyes, natural binders and soft gold were primarily used to create these holy images. Although today many artists use modern paints such as acrylics, some thangka painters are still learning and passing on the knowledge of how to combine these vibrant water-soluble paints.
Traditional thangka painters are then taught how to blend specific colours to use in various elements of the deity and landscape design.
Join Sally Peters for this Pigment Masterclass, in which Sally will go over the correct way to prepare raw pigments and stone colours for thangka artworks. Each participant will create a colour chart to take home for use as a reference in their own painting process.
Please note, this workshop will be mainly demonstrative.
There will be time and supplies for each student to mix one or two pigment colours each.
Sally will bring her own supplies of most of the colours for demonstration and chart making purposes only. Participants who want to blend enough colours to use on your own thangkas will need to bring the following supplies.
Art book/paper, pens, brushes for watercolour
Any pigment or stone colour you may have, gum arabic, mixing bowls, pipette.
Otherwise feel free to just watch Sally demonstrate the techniques involved.

In 2004 Sally completed a Visual Arts Diploma, specialising inarts, crafts and community events during which time she developed a children’s’ mindfulness class incorporating mandalas, meditation and movement for wellbeing. Throughout the 2000s she exhibited her paintings at WomenSpace, Circle Bookshop as well as developed a holistic healing path and curated various exhibitions, art happenings in and around Brisbane.
In 2010 whist researching spiritual art for her Master’s degree, Sally met Andy Weber and started a journey of sacred Tibetan Art at Chenrezig Institute and Langri Tangpa Centre the following year after gaining her Masters in Contemporary Gallery Practices at the University of Tasmania. Sally also has studied briefly with Karma Phunstok on retreat at his studio and at the Tibetan Festival workshops at the Powerhouse Brisbane.
The prime interest of the esoteric, iconography, meditation and healing/self-development has led her deeper into the beautiful world of sacred Tibetan Art and the teachings. Her focus of spiritual development through meditation and the Tibetan Thangka arts has been key for her practice.
Developing from using gouache and polymer paint to pigment and stone colour and pure gold paints over the last few years has increased the depth of the artworks integrity.
The Cost of this workshop:
$50 per person - each participant will be provided with notes and complete a colour chart to take home.
