WILD BASKET WORKSHOP with Judith and Richard Wolski

  • Chenrezig Institute 33 Johnsons Road Eudlo, QLD, 4554 Australia (map)

About Event:

In this Wild Baskets workshop we will be making a Melon Basket which is constructed with a circle inside a circle and joined at right angles with a stitch called a Godseye.  Ribs are then added to construct the bowl shape.

The basket will be approximately 22cm in height and diameter. The materials we will be using are foraged fibers: Weed Vines collected from Sunshine Coast Hinterland properties and a variety of leaves and vines collected from our Property in Diamond Valley. We will also use cordage made from various leaves.

We make sure everyone goes home with a finished Wild Basket.

Workshop Facilitators:

Judith and Richard have conducted many workshops right across Queensland and NSW, with they’re use of natural fibres for  WILD BASKETS developed over 30 years ago. Judith is  the weaver and Richard is the ‘Hunter Gatherer’. Their craft grew out of their dedication to protect native bush and its inhabitants, together with their enthusiasm to be creative using normally discarded items. They joined local land conservation groups to help relieve the bush of destructive weeds and vines and started experimenting in weaving with them.

Judith's interest in basket weaving began as a child. Her grandmother lost her sight and basket weaving was one of her therapies. Jude would visit and they would make baskets together.  As an adult, Judith learnt some valuable traditional basket weaving techniques using natural plant fibres from a lady who had spent many years in New Guinea and Arnhem Land. She started experimenting with local plant fibres available in the Central Queensland region and soon developed her own style and techniques.

Both Richard and Judith have been living on the Sunshine Coast since 2000 and decided to grow as many weaving plants as possible.  They sell their Wild Baskets from their Gallery at home and have exhibited in the Chenrezig Wellbeing Centre exhibitions on several occasions.

The art of Weaving with natural plant fibres is a craft which can inspire creativity, and the materials are available all around us.
