Mixed media Gel Plate and Cyanotype Printing Workshop

  • Chenrezig Institute 33 Johnsons Road Eudlo, QLD, 4554 Australia (map)

About Event:

In this workshop, we’ll explore simple cyanotype and gel plate printing, with participants welcome to try either or both techniques. Suitable for both beginners and those with previous experience, the session will be an opportunity to experiment, play and have fun combining these two creative printmaking methods. We’ll also have a range of gel plates available to use.

In the morning session, we’ll introduce the basics of both techniques. Cyanotype uses light-sensitive paper to create images, which takes time to develop. We’ll prepare the cyanotype images in the morning and place them in daylight to expose while we continue working, allowing them to be developed and ready to work on in the afternoon.

The afternoon session will provide more time to experiment with the techniques, explore different combinations and develop your own creative ideas.

We’ll explore how gel plate printing can be combined with cyanotype images, creating exciting and unexpected layered effects.

There will be plenty of time to experiment more deeply with gel plate printing, including monochrome printing, ghost prints, layering, and comparing the results of different paint brands and papers.

Both cyanotype and gel plate printing are easy-to-learn techniques that require no previous printmaking or art experience. Both are monoprinting processes, meaning that each individual print is unique. The spontaneous nature of these techniques encourages experimentation and discovery. You never quite know what image will emerge, so it’s good to “expect the unexpected”!

Once you’ve learned the basic techniques, there are endless possibilities to explore. Most of all, it’s fun!

Your Teacher

From 2023 to 2026, I have taught small introductory workshops in gel plate printing in both Queensland and Bali. This will be my sixth workshop at Chenrezig Art Studio.

Since retiring from full-time work as a craft maker in 2018, I have explored a diverse range of creative mediums, including mixed media on paper, acrylic on canvas, collage, digital art and printmaking.

In my own work, I enjoy allowing the creative process to unfold in unexpected ways, giving both the artist and viewer space for meaning to emerge naturally.

During 2025–26, I have focused on creating mixed-media works, from large-scale pieces on canvas to smaller, print-centred works on paper, with cyanotype becoming an important part of my practice.

Exploring the potential of art as a healing modality and creative practice is central to my work.

I’m excited to share this creative time with you and to explore these playful and spontaneous printmaking techniques together.
